Mixed Breeds Sizing
What Size Crate for a Mixed Breed Dog? A Simple, No-Guess Method
Mixed breeds are the best… and also the hardest to “size chart” because they don’t always match neat breed standards. The good news is you don’t need perfect breed info to choose the right crate — you need a repeatable method.
Step 1 — Measure length and height
-
Length: nose to base of tail + 5–10cm
-
Height: floor to top of head/ears + 5–10cm
Those two numbers are the foundation.
Step 2 — Identify body type, not breed
Use these simple categories:
-
Long + low: Dachshund-type bodies → lower entry height matters
-
Broad + stocky: bully-type bodies → width matters more than you think
-
Tall + lean: shepherd/kelpie-type → height and length matter most
-
Fluffy + thick-coated: “extra width” and airflow becomes important
Step 3 — Choose based on sleeping style
-
Curlers: cosy fits work well
-
Sprawlers: pick the longer option within your size band
-
Anxious dogs: often settle better with a den-like, not-too-big feel
Step 4 — Puppy mixes: plan for adult size
If your mixed-breed puppy is still growing, choose based on their likely adult range (vet estimates help) and manage extra space during toilet training.
Step 5 — Match the crate style to your home routine
-
Bedroom near you = easier settling
-
Living room furniture-style crate = more likely to be used consistently
-
Multi-dog home = separate bays or double crate options
