How to Puppy Proof Your Home: Room-by-Room Checklist

Puppy-proofing is basically toddler-proofing… with sharper teeth and zero self-control. Do it once properly and you’ll save yourself stress, vet visits, and the loss of at least one phone charger.

Living room

  • hide power cords (or use cord covers)
  • remove small chewable items (remotes, kids toys, shoes)
  • block access under couches if they can get stuck
  • create a puppy zone with crate/pen

Kitchen

  • keep bins secured
  • no access to cleaning products
  • don’t leave food at nose height
  • consider a feeding mat to reduce spills

Bedroom

  • tidy cables and chargers
  • keep laundry off the floor
  • if using a bedroom crate, ensure door clearance and quiet placement

Bathroom & laundry

  • shut doors or use baby gates
  • store chemicals high and locked
  • keep toilet lids closed (yes, really)

Outdoors

  • check fencing gaps
  • remove toxic plants (if known)
  • secure pool areas
  • keep tools and sharp items out of reach
