How to Make a Dog Crate Comfortable: Calm Setup Checklist
How to Make a Dog Crate Comfortable (So They Actually Want to Use It)
Dogs don’t automatically love crates. They love comfort, safety, predictability, and a space that feels like theirs. Here’s how to build that.
Start with placement
- Close to you during early training
- Away from drafts/heat blasts
- Not in a high-traffic collision zone
Bedding: comfort without overheating
- Use a supportive cushion sized to the crate
- Add a light blanket for nesting
- If your dog runs hot, choose breathable layers
Make it den-like
- Cover part of the crate (not fully sealed)
- Keep lighting softer at night
- Aim for “cozy nook” energy
Add enrichment the smart way
Use crate-only “specials”:
- treat-dispensing toys
- long-lasting chews (supervised)
- lick mats for settling
Reinforce calm entries and exits
Reward:
- walking in calmly
- lying down quietly
- waiting a beat before rushing out
